Alpbachtal Ski and Snowboard Resort, Austria

A picture of Tyrolean elegance, the town of Alpbachtal is situated on a lovely plateau in the beautiful Alpbach Valley, which runs south from the Inn Valley, between Innsbruck and Kufstein. Voted ‘Austria's most beautiful village’ in 1983, Alpbachtal ski resort combines a stunning location with easily accessible slopes for beginner and intermediate level skiers, hence its popularity as a family destination.

Alpbach village has a population of 2,300 and is perched at an altitude of 1,000m. Thanks to its homogenous architectural style, the ski resort is very picturesque and charming, and there is a variety of accommodation including four-star and three-star hotels, inns, farmhouses, private accommodation and holiday apartments.

The nightlife is typically Tyrolean and lively, and is one of the factors which keeps many visitors returning year after year. Although there is a relatively limited range of restaurants at the resort itself, farther up the mountain are plenty of quaint old-fashioned eateries. A ski kindergarten is available for both skiers and non-skiers, while babysitting can be arranged through the Alpbachtal tourist office.

Skiing in Alpbach offers every amenity, including 45kms of groomed trails, 32kms of immaculate cross-country skiing trails in scenic surroundings, untracked powder slopes for ski mountaineers, and cleared winter hiking trails.

The villages of Brixlegg, Reith and Rattenberg are located lower in the Alpbach Valley and offer more accommodation and a wide range of runs. Both Rattenberg and Brixlegg are famous for their blown and cut crystal. Farther away is the neighbouring Ziller Valley, featuring 11 ski areas along a road that ends at the famous Hintertux Glacier. Innsbruck, one of Austria’s most culturally rich cities, is less than an hour away by car or bus for those interested in sightseeing.

The ski season runs from December through April, with bargains to be had during the spring months. Munich Airport is the main gateway to Alpbachtal, being just two hours away by autobahn.
