Alpine Ski and Snowboard Resort, USA

Opened in 1984 and nestled in the heart of the Pocono Mountains in eastern Pennsylvania, Alpine Mountain ski resort has a good variety of beginner to advanced ski and snowboard runs, and also boasts a terrain park with half-pipe. Additionally, Alpine Mountain specialises in ski programs for children.

Facilities at the resort consist of a full service lodge with ski shop, rental and repair shops, as well as a certified ski school. Accommodation is in hotels, inns, resorts and cottages, along with villa and house rentals. There is a café, pizza shop, and a lounge overlooking the slopes that offers drinks and live weekend entertainment.

Alpine Mountain consists of 21 slopes that run over a 150-metre vertical; over half of the slopes are geared towards intermediate skiers and snowboarders. Five lift systems (including two quads, one double and two surface chairlifts), provide access to all pistes, the longest of which is 1.9kms. Alpine Mountain also boasts a hundred per cent artificial snowmaking.

Away from the slopes, the Poconos are loaded with wooded peaks and valleys dotted with numerous sparkling lakes, rivers and waterfalls and offer hundreds of kilometres of scenic drives. There are also several nearby towns worthy of a visit, including Mount Pocono, Mountainhome, Cresco, Canadensis and Paradise Valley - which all have inviting antique and speciality shops.

The ski season at Alpine Mountain ski resort runs from December to March and the most convenient means of transportation here is to fly to Wilkes-Barre Scranton International Airport and hire a car.
