Alyeska Ski and Snowboard Resort, USA

Located to the southeast of Anchorage, along the scenic Turnagain Arm, in an area of pristine natural beauty and alpine challenge, you will find Alaska’s largest ski resort. Alyeska offers convenient big-mountain skiing and a brilliant, machine-built terrain park.

Alyeska is a fairly compact resort village with essential services and facilities. Childcare facilities in Alyeska are second to none with the Little Bear's Playhouse taking care of toddlers from six months to 10 years ($35 full day, or $5 an hour), and the Alyeska Prince Hotel also offering babysitting.

The main-stay lodging at Alyeska ski resort is the Alyeska Prince Hotel, with its 307 well equipped rooms, several restaurants, shops and other guest facilities. A chairlift or tramway will whisk you to the slopes in no time. Condos and bed-and-breakfasts are also available in Alyeska, but for more choice and lively nightlife, head to Anchorage.

Alyeska is well known for its wide-open, above tree-line intermediate to advanced trails as well as its broad and gentle novice runs, and there are 68 pistes to choose from, the longest of which is 3.2kms. Nine lifts, including high-speed quads, have an hourly uplift capacity of 10,355 people, and the terrain park with half-pipe will suit snowboarders.

For a break from the slopes, Anchorage has many attractions, including: the Alaska Botanical Garden; the Oscar Anderson House, a restored home built in 1915; the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum; Earthquake Park, featuring depictions of the March 1964 earthquake; and Eklutna Village Historical Park, with exhibits about the traditions and culture of the Native Americans and Russians.

The ski season at Alyeska runs from November to April and the best way to get here is to fly to Anchorage International Airport and hire a car as public transport to the resort, unless you are staying at the Prince Hotel, is limited.
