Located in the northeast of Oregon, Anthony Lakes was first used by skiers back in the early 1930s, and a resort was established here soon after. Set within beautiful glacial scenery and offering a number of beginner to expert pistes, Anthony Lakes has some of the best powder skiing in the northwest, at an affordable price.
Essential facilities at the resort include a retail shop, full service rental shop, Nordic Centre and experienced instructors, and there are plenty of non-ski activities. North Powder, to the east, is the nearest town with lodgings; while most people tend to migrate back to either Baker City or La Grande. Here you will find a range of hotels, motels, inns and ranches, as well as restaurants and bars.
There are an impressive 21 trails at Anthony Lakes, all of which are open to snowboarders, with an emphasis on intermediate to expert sliders. A chair and a surface lift, with an hourly capacity for 1,200 people, operate over a 275-metre vertical and supply all pistes, the longest of which is a respectable 2.5kms.
Away from the slopes and for a spectacular drive through desert and mountain terrain, is the loop going through the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, to the west of Anthony Lakes. The route begins on the FR-73 and FR-52 to Ukiah, before heading east towards Starkey and La Grande on route 244; always check ahead for road and weather conditions.
The Anthony Lakes Mountain resort’s ski season runs from mid-November to mid-April, and half-priced tickets are available on Thursdays in January, February and March and from March 21 to 25. The most convenient way to get here is to fly to Portland or Seattle and take a shuttle bus, or hire a car.
