Anzère Ski and Snowboard Resort, Switzerland

Located in the southern Swiss region of Valais, east of Lake Geneva and south of Bern, Anzère ski resort has open snowfields with magnificent views of the high peaks of the Valais Alps and across to the imposing Mont Blanc. Skiing is from 1500m to 2500m and most of the runs are ideal for intermediate skiers, with limited beginner and expert slopes; however, there are some good off-piste opportunities.

The south-facing village of Anzère was built on an ancient pastoral site and there are still numerous basic Alpine dwellings made of stone and wood. The village square is a popular pedestrian zone with a special character and there are ski and snowboard schools, sport shops, museums, a planetarium, and an Alpine garden.

There is slope side lodging in Anzère with 500 beds available in four hotels, and 7,000 beds in chalets and apartments; additional lodging is nearby. Après-ski is laid-back and there are several cafés and restaurants as well as a handful of bars and discos. An excellent kindergarten ski school is also on hand.

Anzère ski resort’s 40kms of downhill runs are served by 11 ski lifts, including: one cable car; two chairlifts; and eight surface/drag lifts all able to handle up to 9,500 skiers per hour. Anzère has beginner, intermediate and advanced runs with an emphasis on the intermediate slopes; the longest run is five kilometres.

For alternative skiing there is heliskiing on the Wildhorn Glacier (3,247m) as well as summer skiing. Away from the slopes, Sion, capital of the Valais canton, is a prosperous, picturesque town and famous for its two striking castles. Basilique de Valère is an atmospheric Gothic fortified-church complex boasting the world's oldest playable organ and a colourful museum.

The Anzère ski season runs from December to April with special deals offered at the beginning and end of the season and in mid-January. The most convenient way to get to Anzère ski resort is to fly to Geneva and take a train to Sion, from where Poste buses and taxis run to the resort.
