Argentiere Ski and Snowboard Resort, France

Located in the Chamonix Valley in the Haute Savoie region of France, 10kms from the Swiss border, Argentiere ski resort is one of several smaller resorts that make up the Chamonix ski area and has a well balanced variety of ski terrain. The ski area known as Le Grand Montets is on its doorstep and boasts some of the best expert on and off-piste skiing and snowboarding in the world.

Argentiere is a small, quaint Alpine town with commendable facilities and services, including, banks, a supermarket and a sports centre. There is plenty to do here for the non-skier, with a wide range of shops available where ski-sporting outlets are well-represented. Argentiere also has a good childcare day centre.

Tourists tend to dwarf the local population in season and there is a good range of accommodation and numerous beds available in budget and luxury establishments. There is no shortage of food in Argentiere, with 80 restaurants on offer, while après-ski/nightlife is lively and exciting, with 20 bars and three nightclubs.

There are 30kms of prepared slopes at Argentiere ski resort, totalling 16 runs that are particularly suited to upper intermediate, advanced, and expert skiers and snowboarders. Eleven ski lifts, featuring draglifts and chairlifts, operate over the ski field and have a capacity to lift thousands of people per hour.

For alternative skiing, the Chamonix area encompasses five separate ski areas on one pass. If Argentiere's slopes are a little tough, nearby Le Tour, Brévent and Flégère have gentler beginner slopes, and Aigulle du Midi has more off-piste options. Chamonix has impressive views of the majestic Mont Blanc (Europe's highest peak), superb skiing and an interesting town.

Argentiere's long ski season runs from November to May and there are special pre-Christmas holiday, mid-January, and March/April rates. The quickest and most practical way to get to Argentiere is to fly to Geneva and take a train, or hire a car.
