Located in what is reputed to be Austria's sunniest region, Carinthia, Bad Kleinkirchheim is a famous old world spa resort town, perfect for families. The homeland of famous Olympic downhill racer Franz Klammer, the ski resort boasts 100kms of groomed ski runs, while the spas and hotels offer thermal treatments, wellness benefits and all-around relaxation.
As an old spa town, Bad Kleinkirchheim boasts countless non-ski activities, as well as an excellent range of hotels, shops, restaurants, cafés and bars. Because the town is quite large and spread out, make sure that you check where your accommodation is in relation to the lifts or you might be getting a dose of extra exercise every day.
Hotels range from elegant to simple and are listed by type: family, sport, business and wellness. There isn't great nightlife, but there are enough good bars and discos to make any evening enjoyable.
The surrounding slopes have a good mix of runs catering to all levels of ability, although most are for intermediate skiers. There are 100kms of runs, with the longest being four kilometres. The vertical drop is an impressive 1,370m. Boarders and cross-country skiers are also well catered to.
The ski season runs from the beginning of December to early April, with the cheapest times being at either extreme of the season, as well as in mid-January. The resort of Bad Kleinkirchheim is about as far away from the usual gateways to Austria as one can get; however, frequent train and bus services are available. Some skiers choose to connect to Klagenfurt, capital of Carinthia, only 50kms away.
