Loved by mountaineers since the late 19th century and famed for its top level skiing and snowboarding on majestic slalom pistes, Bardonecchia ski resort is conveniently situated on the French border in the southwestern Alps.
Bardonecchia actually encompasses six villages: Fregiusia, Les Arnaus, Melezet, Millaures, Rochemolles and Pian del Sole. They are characterised by historical town centres surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery. Facilities are good and boast a range of shops and excellent childcare services.
Accommodation is wide-ranging and there are thousands of beds in hotels, pensions, and chalet/apartments. Non-ski activities include hiking and ice-skating, and the Bardonecchia ski region is also well known for its variety of good value, high quality restaurants. The nightlife is laid-back and there are a handful of bars and discos.
There are four different ski areas at the Bardonecchia ski resort, comprised of 140kms of pistes that are serviced by 27 chair and draglifts, with an hourly capacity for 22,000 people. The slopes are generally uncongested and are mainly geared to the intermediate skier and snowboarder.
For alternative skiing, Les Trois Vallees is just over the border and offers 600kms of pistes for all levels; the famed Courchevel and Meribel resorts are both featured. The Milky Way ski area is also nearby. Away from the slopes, Turin is a city of museums and palaces and offers a great day out.
Bardonecchia’s ski season runs from December to April, with special rates in mid-December and towards the end of the season. The most convenient way to get here is to fly to Turin and hire a car, or take a train right into Bardonecchia.
