Berchtesgadener Ski and Snowboard Resort, Germany

Situated in south eastern Bavaria, close to the Austrian border, and only 23kms from Salzburg, Berchtesgadener Land ski resort encompasses the six skiing areas of Berchtesgaden, Götschen, Hochschwarzeck, Jenner, Rossfeld, and Zinkenkogel that surround the city of Berchtesgaden. The resort is good for families with children, with plenty of beginner and intermediate slopes.

The village of Berchtesgaden is located below the numerous summits of the 2,713m high Watzmann mountain. It is a quaint Alpine village featuring winding ancient streets, a castle square and a medieval marketplace. Berchtesgaden has a good complement of shops offering quality sports apparel.

There is a full range of hotels, guesthouses, bed and breakfast’s, pensions, private rooms and holiday apartments, ranging from the most luxurious of hotel/resorts to the more modest establishment. There are 25,000 guest beds in total. The après-ski is lively and exciting, with folklore evenings, regular concerts and numerous bars and discos. Berchtesgaden also has a good ski kindergarten and ski school.

Berchtesgadener Land ski resort features of terrain suitable for all levels at its six ski areas, with an emphasis on learners and intermediate skiers. Its 25 pistes total 40kms in length. Its 39 lifts, made up of 33 surface lifts, 5 chairlifts and one gondola, have a total capacity of more than 17,000 passengers per hour.

The drive from Berchtesgaden to Obersalzberg (where Hitler held court at the Berghof) is one of Bavaria's most scenic routes. A major point of interest is the Kehlstein, or Eagle's Nest, which can be reached only by a thrilling bus ride up a seven-kilometre mountain road, blasted out of solid rock. Nearby Berchtesgaden National Park has some of Germany's most delectable Alpine scenery.

The Berchtesgadener Land ski resort ski season runs from mid-December to the end of March, with deals offered before the Christmas holidays and after the New Year’s holidays, and from mid-March. The best way to get here is to fly to Salzburg Airport and take a train from the city, via Freilassing, to the resort.
