Bohinj Ski and Snowboard Resort, Slovenia

Bohinj ski resort is located in the Julian Alps, not far from the Italian and Austrian borders on two sides, and within the beautiful Triglav National Park. There are two major ski and snowboard centres in the Bohinj glacial basin: Kobla is above the village of Bohinjska Bistrica and a beautiful Alpine lake, and nearby Vogel is the other area, accessible only by cable car.

Bohinjska Bistrica is the main resort village serving Bohinj and there are several other smaller villages and hamlets that surround the slopes. Skiers are attracted to this area by the beautiful surroundings, unhurried atmosphere and excellent facilities, including a good range of shops, and childcare.

Lodgings can be found at the various villages and there are over 4,000 beds in hotels, apartments and private homes. Bohinj also offers other activities away from the slopes, such as ice-skating and swimming, and a wide range of restaurants, traditional Slovenian inns and bars provide the fairly lively après-ski.

Bohinj ski resort has a good cross-section of runs and its 58kms of pistes are fairly evenly divided among beginner to expert skiers and snowboarders. Kobla has 23kms of the ski field, with a longest run of six kilometres; while Vogel offers 35kms of terrain and a longest run of eight kilometres. There are six lifts at Kobla and nine lifts at Vogel, consisting of chair and drag/surface lifts, with a combined capacity of over 12,000 people per hour.

Away from the slopes, there is some worthwhile sightseeing in the Bohinj region, with the pretty 14th century church of St John, and Lake Bohinj, Mostnice Gorge and Savica Waterfall providing natural sights. The city of Bled, on Lake Bled, is a sightseer’s delight and the Museum of Alpine Dairy Farming is a must.

The ski season at Bohinj runs from mid-December to the end of March. The most convenient means of getting to Bohinj ski resort is to fly to Ljubljana and hire a car, or take a train from the city to Bohinjska Bistrica.
