Bonneval-sur-Arc ski resort is located at the far end of the Haute-Maurienne Valley, at the eastern edge of the Rhone-Alps province, near the Italian border. Situated below the Iseran Glacier, it offers mainly intermediate skiing and snowboarding and is renowned for its exceptional snow quality and quiet slopes.
The traditional French Alpine village has a steepled church surrounded by pretty stone chalets, lending the village a quaint and unspoilt sophistication. Facilities are fairly limited but there is a range of shops and a supermarket. The village nursery can provide childcare.
The majority of the accommodation is in chalets and private apartments, but there are also a number of excellent hotels, with the more established places providing night-time entertainment and fine dining. Après-ski in Bonneval-sur-Arc is not limited to hotels alone and there are a handful of bars to choose from.
Nineteen pistes run over 25kms of beginner to expert skiable terrain, with 15kms suited to intermediate skiers and snowboarders. Ten ski systems operate over all slopes, and include three chairlifts and seven draglifts. The longest run is 1.8kms.
For an alternative skiing experience, Bessans is located to the southwest and offers 80kms of prepared runs as well as interesting sightseeing. Also nearby, and only 30kms to the north, is the famous ski resort of Val d'Isere, with its extensive slopes and excellent après-ski, while Vanoise National Park, in between Bonneval-sur-Arc and Val d'Isere, has some fantastic cross-country skiing.
The late ski season at Bonneval-sur-Arc runs from mid-December to early May, with fixed rate tariffs for this period. The most practical way to get to Bonneval-sur-Arc ski resort is to fly to Lyon, and take a bus/train/bus transfer, or hire a car.
