Located in the Haute Savoie region of the French Alps, 210kms east of Lyon, Combloux ski resort is a traditional Alpine resort with the majestic Mont Blanc (Europe's highest peak, 4,308m) looking on. Combloux is for those who love to ski in a beautiful and unhurried environment with superb beginner and intermediate slopes.
The powers-that-be have gone to a lot of trouble in keeping Combloux looking traditional, with its picturesque Alpine architecture of stone and wood and distinct lack of ugly high-rises. Ski tourists and residents alike are mostly French as this is still, largely, an undiscovered resort and consequently free of the tourist masses. Facilities and services are good and there is a good range of shops.
Accommodation in Combloux is tasteful, with the majority of beds available in chalets and apartments, and there are a several modest and upmarket hotels to choose from also. While you ski, your children will be well provided for at the new childcare centre. Night-time entertainment is generally sedate and is largely hotel and restaurant based, but there are also several bars in the village.
Combloux ski resort's 35 runs stretch over 90kms of skiing and snowboarding terrain, 65kms of which are local slopes; another 25kms of pistes are shared with adjoining La Giettaz ski resort. Eighty kilometres of all pistes are reserved for beginners and intermediates, and the longest run is three kilometres. Twenty-five ski lifts have a capacity for 22,500 people per hour.
Alternatively, the exclusive resort of Megeve is only 10 minutes to the south and world renowned Chamonix-Mont Blanc is 30kms to the east. Located in the Upper Arly Valley, the traditional village of Megeve is rich in tradition and history and has interesting sightseeing. Saint-Gervais, an old Roman spa town, is also nearby.
The ski season runs from December to April at Combloux and special deals are offered at the beginning and towards the end of the season, and in mid-January. The best way to get to Combloux is to fly to Geneva and transfer by bus.
