Davos Ski and Snowboard Resort, Switzerland

Located in the south-east corner of Switzerland, Davos is both the largest and one of the better ski resorts found in the country, with a worldwide reputation among skiers for the quality and length of its runs. The skiing is varied with five separate areas (including Klosters) and great intermediate and beginner slopes, plus superb off-piste for experts.

Dwarfed by mountains on both sides and set in a beautiful valley, Davos town is the highest city in Europe (1,560m) with a population of 13,000 that doubles in the season. Split in to two parts, Dorf and Platz, Davos’s facilities are excellent, with banks, museums, great shopping, and an animal park/zoo.

The hotels in Davos have a long and distinguished tradition for excellence and there are 24,000 beds available in over 70 slope-side hotels, and countless apartments. Life off the slopes is lively, with five nightclubs to choose from as well as lots of bars and restaurants. The ski kindergarten price includes lunch.

Davos ski resort, together with Klosters, boasts 325kms of prepared downhill runs. Skiers can descend through small villages, and to Klosters, or cruise miles away and return by train. The longest run is 12kms. There are 50 ski lifts, including: nine cable cars; three gondolas; two funiculars; nine chairlifts; and 27 T-bars; with a lift carrying capacity of over 62,000 people per hour.

Away from the slopes you can take a scenic train ride, visit the winter sport museum, or watch an ice hockey match. Chur, capital of the Graubünden region and the oldest settlement in Switzerland, retains an elegant 16th century old town.

The long ski season runs from November to April, with lower prices offered immediately prior to the Christmas holidays, also in mid-January, and from mid-March. The most common way to get to Davos is to fly to Zürich, take a train via the city to Landquart, and change trains for Davos. Car hire is much quicker.
