Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Resort, USA

With a perfect setting on the southern shore of Lake Tahoe, Heavenly is the region's largest mountain resort, featuring the highest elevation and longest vertical drop, and offering awesome views from the top. The skiing is diverse and the network of lifts extensive, while the facilities and nightlife are outstanding.

Heavenly is an upmarket resort that is loaded with services and facilities, including ski shops and boutiques, a first-aid station and a nursery. The new village on the South Shore's main highway is being added to all the time and now includes two new Marriott Hotel/Clubs, a cinema complex, and the welcoming gondola plaza.

There are 11 lodges within walking distance of Heavenly and scores more hotels and motels in the village and South Lake Tahoe. Apart from skiing and snowboarding, the resort has other attractions and activities such as dog-sledding, tubing and racquetball, and the social scene is lively and exciting with casinos, bars and clubs in nearby South Lake Tahoe.

Heavenly ski resort boasts a huge ski domain with a vertical of 1,067m and more than 90 runs down terrain for all abilities, with the emphasis on top end skiers and snowboarders. Thirty efficient lifts provide slope access and the longest run is a commendable nine kilometres. Heavenly also has excellent snowmaking facilities, while snowboarders have three terrain parks as well as half-pipes.

For alternative skiing and snowboarding, there are numerous other ski resorts in the area, including the more down-to-earth Donner Ski Ranch to the west of Reno. Alternatively, Lake Tahoe is ringed by roads offering endless sightseeing options, and cruising the lake on a steamer is also fun; while Carson City and Reno have more in the way of nightlife.

Heavenly ski resort runs from mid-November to late April and the easiest way to get here is to fly to Reno-Tahoe International Airport or Lake Tahoe Airport and take a hotel shuttle bus or the Tahoe Casino Express.
