Katschberg Ski and Snowboard Resort, Austria

Katschberg ski resort, located on the border of the provinces of Kärnten and Salzburg, covers two mountains - those of Katschberg (2,020m) and Aineck (2,220m). Katschberg is a well-developed tourist centre made popular by its 60kms of excellent and well-maintained ski trails. Catering to families is its specialty, with free child care offered during the ski day.

Katschberg town, with its Roman connection, lies on a plateau at an altitude of 1,641m, immediately above the Katschberg tunnel. Accommodation consists of mostly four-star hotels and vacation apartments with ski-in and ski-out convenience, not a usual feature of European resorts. Folklore evenings are popular and bars and discos are plentiful.

There are 60kms of ski runs in total with a longest section of eight kilometres from the top of Aineck Mountain to the village of St Margarethen (Aineck Mountain mostly consists of open snowfields). Skiing is suitable for all ages and levels from beginner to intermediate. There are 16 lifts with a capacity for 24,000 people per hour.

A tourist train ride in the nearby Pöllatal Valley, known as the 'Valley of a 1,000 Orchids' due to its rich and rare flora and fauna, is enjoyable; additionally, the Pöllatal Nature Park is beautiful. The surrounding area is brimming with charming hamlets; be sure to visit the splendid Knight's Castle in Mautendorf.

Katschberg's ski season runs from mid-December to a week after Easter, with snow guaranteed thanks to cutting-edge snowmaking machines. Salzburg International Airport is the gateway to the region, with trains running to Spittal and buses from here to Katschberg. The most convenient way from Salzburg is by hire car.
