Kirchberg is located in the Tyrol region of Austria and shares the same mountain as the world famous Kitzbühel ski resort. Salzburg is 90kms to the east and Innsbruck is 86kms to the west. Kirchberg is filled with a younger crowd, attracting young families and more dedicated skiers with somewhat lower prices than its flashier neighbour.
Kirchberg is a picturesque village and is a lot smaller than Kitzbühel. However, it has become a major player in the area. Everything here is within easy walking distance and the resort town has some of the wildest après-ski in Austria, with a strong contingent coming from Holland.
There is a variety of quality accommodation, ranging from apartments offering free accommodation for children, to exclusive lodges. A number of mountain restaurants, cafés and coffeehouses add to an exciting après-ski scene and the nightlife here is reason alone for coming to Kirchberg; the London Pub is perhaps the wildest après-ski bar in Europe.
Kirchberg ski resort is centred on two main areas: the Hahnenkamm and Kitzbüheler Horn. The former is decidedly the larger area and is ideal for intermediate skiers. There is a total of 160kms of pistes with 56 lifts and the longest run is eight kilometres. Intermediate skiers will have a great time here and beginners and experts are also well catered for.
Away from the slopes, Kirchberg town has a prominent and beautiful church that is visible from all over town and is worth visiting for a break from the busy après-ski. The nearby Kitzbühel ski resort is the winter entertainment capital of Austria and is a must-see for its pretty buildings and cobbled streets, extensive shopping opportunities and vibrant and exciting nightlife.
The ski season runs from mid-December to mid-April, with the cheapest rates from mid-March to the end of the season. The most convenient way to get here is to fly into Salzburg and take the train to the resort.
