Kranjska Gora ski resort is situated in the beautiful Zgornjesavska Valley, in the north of the Triglav National Park, and is an ideal ski destination for learners and young families. It is also well known for its World Cup competitions and the giant ski jump in nearby Planica.
Situated near the Austrian and Italian borders, Kranjska Gora is a romantic Alpine village with lots of charm and very friendly people. There is a range of facilities and shops here, with ski/sport shops and general merchandise stores.
There are 3,500 beds at the resort, half of which are in nine hotels and the rest in pensions and private residences. Both food and accommodation are great value and there are many non-ski activities to choose from, including horseback riding, hiking and cycling. A wide choice of restaurants can be found both on the mountain and in the village, together with a plentiful selection of discos and bars.
Twenty runs stretch over 30kms of groomed terrain that lie mainly on the north-facing slopes of the Vitranc Mountain. The emphasis is on the beginner skier and snowboarder and night skiing is also available. Eighteen surface lifts and five chairlifts, with an hourly capacity for 17,600 people, provide access to all slopes, the longest of which is four kilometres.
Alternatively, nearby Planica has six jumps, one of which is 180m long. Shoppers, meanwhile, should head for the Elan ski factory (well known for its equipment and clothing bargains) located between the airport and the resort. For days away from Kranjska Gora, the 16th century town of Villach is well worth a visit, as is Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana.
The ski season at Kranjska Gora runs from mid-December to late March and the most convenient means for getting here is to fly to Ljubljana’s Brnik Airport and take a train/bus combination from the city, or hire a car.
