La Thuile Ski and Snowboard Resort, Italy

La Thuile ski resort is located in the Aosta Valley of the western Alps, in the Mont Blanc range, near the French/Italian border. This modern and well equipped resort is in a glen, sheltered by the massif of the Mont Blanc, and enjoys a dry and sunny climate with lots of snow. It connects with La Rosiere in France to offer a huge range of pistes.

Overlooked by the Rutor Glacier and Mont Blanc, La Thuile is a town of two halves divided by a river, with the old mining town on the one side and the purpose-built resort of Planibel on the other. Planibel has most of the facilities and shops and is a laid-back resort suited to families with its excellent child facilities.

There are over 2,000 beds on offer in this small town, in hotels, pensions and private residences. Some of the larger hotels provide evening entertainment with their bars and restaurants and, as well as the excellent mountain and town restaurants, La Thuile boasts fine dining. There are also a handful of bars and discos to choose from, and children have plenty of activities, including ski tuition.

Together with La Rosiere, La Thuile has 155kms of slopes with 61 downhill runs for beginner to advanced skiers and snowboarders, and a longest run of 11kms. There are 37 ski lifts, including one cableway, 16 chairlifts and 20 surface lifts, with an hourly capacity for 49,000 people.

Nearby Courmayeur offers another 100kms of runs, including the 20-kilometre World Cup downhill into Chamonix, France, one of the world’s longest. In addition, the exclusive resort of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc is just beyond Courmayeur, through the Mont Blanc Tunnel. The Roman city of Aosta offers a great day out away from the slopes and features Roman remains and other interesting buildings.

The ski season at La Thuile runs from early December to late April/early May, with special rates in mid-December and from mid-March (excluding Easter). Both Geneva and Turin airports have direct services to La Thuile and are 1 hour, 30 minutes away by road.
