Le Grand Bornand is a combination of two ski resorts, with Le Grand Bornand at 1,000m and Le Grand Bornand Chinaillon at 1,300m. Simply known as Le Grand Bornand and located in the Haute Savoie ski region near Geneva, the resort offers a broad range of skiing terrain in a traditional type ski resort with some lift access from the town centre.
Originally a farming village, Le Grand Bornand today has all the facilities of a modern day ski resort and still manages to retain its rustic charm. There are reminders of the past, such as the splendid bulb church. Services include banks, sports shops and restaurants and there is also a childcare centre.
Le Grand Bornand and Chinaillon villages offer over 19,000 guest beds in 500 traditional chalets complete with wooden exteriors and balconies, apartments and hotels. Restaurants are plentiful, and there is a huge range of bars and a couple of nightclubs. A ski kindergarten is also on hand.
Forty-eight slopes run over 65kms of mainly beginner to intermediate skiing terrain with only three expert runs for expert skiers and snowboarders; the longest run is four kilometres. Le Grand Bornand has a system of 40 lifts, featuring gondolas, chairlifts, and draglifts, with a combined capacity for 38,300 people per hour.
For alternative skiing, the nearby resort of La Clusaz is another traditional village with a greater range of advanced slopes than Le Grand Bornand; après-ski is lively. La Balme de Thuy is also within easy reach and boasts a fascinating history, retold in its captivating museum.
The ski season at Le Grand Bornand runs from mid-December to late April, with the lowest rates in January and April. The most practical way to get to the resort is to fly to Geneva and take a bus from the airport.
