Located southeast of Grenoble in the Veneon Valley, in the heart of the Oisans, Les Deux Alpes is one of France's oldest ski resorts, well known for its world class ski areas and the largest skiable glacier in Europe. Off-piste and après-ski activities are numerous and there is also summer skiing available from June to September.
Les Deux Alpes is an old town and is noted for its old stone buildings and churches; a stroll through the Venosc end of town is delightful. Although a lively resort town, Les Deux Alpes caters for singles, couples and families alike, and facilities are first rate, with a host of shopping opportunities.
Accommodation is widespread among hotels, chalets, pensions and private residences and there are over 35,000 beds available. Cafés and restaurants abound on the mountain and in the town and the après-ski is one of the liveliest in the Alps, with three nightclubs and a huge number of bars that stay open until dawn.
Les Deux Alpes ski resort has 76 runs stretching over 200kms of slopes on both sides of the valley, with all skill levels catered for and an emphasis on intermediate skiers and snowboarders. With a vertical descent of over two kilometres, the Vallons de la Meije is a must for experts. Sixty-three ski lifts operate over the entire ski field.
For alternative skiing, the nearby resort of La Grave has fantastic skiing in a stunning location in the Ecrins National Park. L'Alpe-d'Huez is also nearby and offers additional skiing in a quiet environment. For a day away from the slopes, Grenoble, gateway to the French Alps, is a 16th century university town offering interesting sightseeing.
The ski season at Les Deux Alpes runs from late November to early May, with summer skiing from mid-June to late August; passes are cheapest from late November to mid-December. The most convenient way to get to Les Deus Alpes ski resort is to fly to Lyon and take the Satobus to the resort.
