Les Diablerets Ski and Snowboard Resort, Switzerland

With its majestic summits and pristine forests, Les Diablerets (The Little Devils) ski resort, in the heart of the Vaud Alps and east of Lake Geneva, is a quiet and unpretentious resort that continues to preserve its traditional feel. The skiing is largely suitable for intermediates and beginners and there is some fantastic off-piste for advanced skiers. Summer skiing and boarding is possible on Glacier 3000.

The pretty mountain village of Les Diablerets (1,200m), under its imposing glacier, is set among spectacular scenery and is a spacious, well-established chalet-style resort with excellent facilities for families. There are many shops, banks and a library, and the excellent Swiss Ski School also has an afternoon kindergarten.

Over 5,000 slope-side beds are available at Les Diablerets, with hotels, inns, bed-and-breakfasts, chalets, apartments and private rentals (available nearby). There is a variety of traditional restaurants serving Swiss, Italian and Chinese fare, while après-ski is fairly quiet during the week, becoming livelier during the weekends.

Les Diablerets ski resort has 26 slopes running over 65kms of local downhill beginner to intermediate terrain; there are 25kms of runs on the glacier. There are 24 ski lifts, including three cable cars, one gondola, six chairlifts and 14 surface lifts, with a capacity for 22,565 people per hour.

Alternatively, the exclusive hive of Gstaad is only 15kms away and should the snow fail here, the wide skiing area on the Alpes Vaudoises pass gives access to 220kms of piste. Resorts include: Leysin, Les Mosses-La Lécherette, Villars/Gryon, Château d'Oex, Rougemont, Gstaad and Lenk-Adelboden. Away from the slopes, the town of Montreux, nestled on the edge of Lake Geneva, has interesting sightseeing.

The ski season at Les Diablerets ski resort runs from December to April, while the Les Diablerets Glacier 3000 is open from October to the end of July. The best way to get to Les Diablerets is to fly to Geneva or Zürich, and transfer by train.
