Located to the south of Yosemite National Park in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Mammoth Mountain ski resort has the greatest consistent snowfall of any North American resort, a huge ski domain and slopes for all levels. Facilities here are extensive, and snowboarders have all pistes and three terrain parks to slide on.
Mammoth Mountain has a village at the base of the slopes offering a wide range of shopping and facilities, including ski/sports boutiques and repair shops, first-aid, ski schools and childcare; it provides skiers with direct access to the mountain. The nearby, older town of Mammoth Lakes offers additional facilities.
Slope-side lodgings are available at the village, and there are full service hotels, motels, luxury condos, chalets, cabins and dormitory-style accommodation in the town of Mammoth Lakes. The mountain and town also offer a variety of very good restaurants and plenty of other activities for non-skiers, including a thriving night scene.
Mammoth Mountain boasts over 150 runs and 1,400 hectares of diverse terrain catering to all levels of skier and snowboarder; intermediates receive the greatest share of the terrain. Twenty-eight lifts, including high-speed quads, feed all slopes, the longest of which is five kilometres. Snowboarders also have three terrain parks and half-pipes.
Away from the slopes, Yosemite National Park offers some scenic drives and spectacular landscapes and Kings Canyon National Park lies farther to the south. The nearby towns of Bishop and Bridgeport offer additional sightseeing and shopping; while the big cities of San Francisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas are a day’s drive away.
Mammoth Mountain’s long ski season runs from early November to June, and the most convenient means of transportation is to fly to Reno and transfer by shuttle bus or hire car.
