Megeve is part of a huge ski area covering the 13 resorts of the Evasion Mont-Blanc ski region in Savoie, France, to the south of Lake Geneva. A fashionable Alpine resort, Megeve draws an affluent international clientele, and the slopes of Mont d’Arbois, Rochebrune and the Jaillet provide excellent skiing. Megeve also has one of the best ski schools in Europe.

Megeve is an authentic French Alpine town with traditional buildings and a pretty church. The ski resort retains much of its local character, with its narrow, cobbled streets and pedestrianised centre. There are over 200 shops, featuring fashionable boutiques and ski sport shops, while horse-drawn sleighs provide alternative transport.

Lodgings are provided by a wide range of two- to four-star hotels, chalets and apartments, and there are over 40,000 beds available in total. Alternative non-ski activities include ice-skating, swimming and indoor tennis; additionally, there is a vast selection of restaurants, typical bistros and tea rooms. There is also plenty of nightlife, with 20 bars, nine discos, a casino and folklore evenings.

There are 226kms of extensive groomed slopes at Megeve ski resort, the longest of which is 3.8kms. Most of the terrain is given over to beginners and intermediates, while advanced and expert skiers and snowboarders have 50kms of runs. Seventy-nine lifts, including six gondolas, three cable cars, 28 chairlifts and 42 surface lifts have an hourly capacity of 38,400 people.

For alternative skiing, there are another 474kms of prepared slopes in the local Mont Blanc group, and a huge range of off-piste opportunities. Saint-Gervais is particularly alluring. It is an old spa town that dates back to Roman times, with plenty of worthwhile attractions in addition to its ski slopes. Chamonix is also nearby, and Geneva makes a good daytrip.

The ski season at Megeve runs from mid-December to mid-April, and there are special rates at the beginning and towards the end of the season. The most convenient way to get to Megeve is to fly to Geneva and take the Skibus to the resort.
