Meiringen / Hasliberg Ski and Snowboard Resort, Switzerland

Located in the region of Bern, southeast of the capital and southwest of Zürich, Meiringen / Hasliberg ski resort is very popular with winter sports enthusiasts and families. There is a good cross-section of varying difficulty slopes featuring natural gullies and ridges over rugged terrain, making Meiringen / Hasliberg especially appealing to snowboarders. Children are very well catered for, with a variety of facilities available.

Lying at only 600m above sea level, Meiringen and Hasliberg are two small villages within two kilometres of one another and there is a full range of facilities and shopping. For children, there is Bidmi Skihäsliland, a huge learning play area in the snow with special children's ski lifts, as well as the Igloo Village and Tower.

Meiringen and Hasliberg boast slope-side accommodation in 40 hotels (1,500 beds), and 3,000 beds in chalets and apartments. Après-ski is generally centred on the larger hotels and is fairly sedate, featuring regular folklore evenings, but the villages' bars and discos are lively, owing to the large population of snowboarders.

Twenty modern transport installations at Meiringen / Hasliberg ski resort, among them the Eagle Express and Planplatten's eight-person gondolas, provide access to a ski arena with a total of 60kms of well prepared beginner to advanced pistes at altitudes of up to 2,433m. The longest run is 12kms, and the lifts have a combined capacity for 15,400 people per hour.

For spectacular viewing, the panorama restaurant on Planplatten offers diners a wonderful perspective of the Alps. The Reichenbach Falls, scene of a Sherlock Holmes epic, are also nearby, but only seen in winter as a frozen string of ice. Brienz-Axalp offers alternative skiing, while the famed resort of Grindelwald, with its Eiger setting, is also nearby.

The Meiringen / Hasliberg ski season runs from December to April, with special rates pre-Christmas, in mid-January and mid-March. The best way to get here is to fly to Zürich and transfer by train, with a change in Lucerne.
