Montafon Valley Ski and Snowboard Resort, Austria

Montafon is a high Alpine valley known for its sun and powdery snow. It stretches some 40kms at the southern tip of Vorarlberg. The valley, filled with mountain villages and major winter recreation areas, is encircled by the mountain ranges of Rätikon, Silvretta and Verwall. Each resort is separate, with extensive lift networks, long runs and varied terrain.

The Montafon Alpine Valley encompasses 11 villages lying at altitudes of between 600 and 1,430m, surrounded by mountains as high as 3,312m (Piz Buin). There are villages with a sporting character and extensive leisure programmes as well as other, more peaceful resorts, perfect for family holidays and total relaxation.

Accommodation ranges from luxurious to private pensions and there are 18,000 beds available in total. There are 25 bars and discos in the whole area, with Schruns offering a wider range of nightlife than the other smaller and sleepier resorts. Eight ski kindergartens with adventure parks are available for kids.

Montafon Valley ski resort has over 200kms of signposted and tended pistes, suitable for beginner, intermediate and expert skiers. The longest run is 12kms. A total of 65 lifts, including 10 gondolas, four cable cars, and 23 chairlifts transport a maximum of 82,400 people per hour.

Throughout the Montafon Valley, yellow-and-black signs point out natural attractions and destinations. Hochjoch-Zamang offers skiing in the back bowls and down the front, and is the main mountain at Schruns (of Hemingway fame); Tschagguns has Grabs-Golm for some easier runs; Silvretta-Nova at Gaschurn and St Gallenkirch is a superb ski circus on several mountains; and the Schafberg of Gargellen is secluded in a side valley.

The ski season runs from early December to mid-April with the cheapest rates offered the second week before Christmas and the last month of the season. Zürich International Airport is the nearest and regular trains go from here to the resort via Bludenz.
