Lying 95kms southwest of Münich and 20kms north of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Oberammergau ski resort is mostly suited to beginners and intermediate skiers and is particularly popular with families due to its excellent ski school and child care. Cross-country skiing is also popular here and numerous hiking trails lead through the nearby mountains to hikers' inns.

Sitting in a wide valley and surrounded by forests and mountains, Oberammergau is a year-round resort town with a full range of shopping and services. Besides skiing, Oberammergau is also world famous for its woodcarvings, and the famed ‘Passion Play’ has been staged here every 10 years since the 17th century.

Oberammergau offers thousands of beds in a range of first-class hotels and cosy inns, to more modest pensions and bed and breakfast establishments. Aprčs-ski and nightly entertainment is celebrated with fervour and there is a good choice of coffee houses, cafés, restaurants, and bars and discos. Folklore evenings and concerts are also a regular occurrence in Oberammergau.

Oberammergau ski resort has a good range of slopes (16kms in total) with an emphasis on beginner and intermediate runs. There is also a long, ungroomed expert run, with an alternate (double black) steep pitch. There are nine lifts, including a gondola, one chairlift, and seven surface lifts, with a capacity for 12,000 skiers per hour.

The surrounding Ammer Valley is a treasure trove for explorers and Oberammergau is often used as a base for visiting Linderhof Castle, the Benedictine monastery at Ettal, or the fairy-tale Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles. For alternative skiing, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is Germany’s foremost winter resort, offering excellent skiing and winter sports facilities.

Oberammergau’s ski season runs from mid-December to March and there are special offers up to the Christmas holidays, after the New Year celebrations, and at the end of the season. The best way to get to Oberammergau ski resort is to fly to Münich, take a train to the city and a regular train to the resort, or hire a car at the airport.
