Located in the south of the Valais region, Saas - Fee ski resort is one of the highest and prettiest resorts in Switzerland, set in awesome glacial mountain scenery. Skiing is extensive and there are runs for all levels, from beginner to expert, while snowboarders have an excellent snow park and snowboard schools. There is also summer skiing on the Mittelallalin Glacier.
Saas - Fee itself, at 1,800m above sea level, has maintained its traditional village charm, with its narrow, traffic-free streets. All facilities and services are available and there is a huge range of shopping options, from fashionable boutiques to some good designer ski shops.
Accommodation is a blend of luxury hotels and chalets and apartments, with over 7,500 beds in total. Restaurants offer fine dining but are expensive, and après-ski is lively and exciting with several traditional pubs, bars and nightclubs. There are two ski kindergartens: one at the Alphubel Hotel, and the other at the Schweizerhof.
Saas - Fee ski resort has 100kms of downhill runs that skirt the glacier and its crevasses, 50kms of which are suited to intermediate skiers, while the rest are shared by beginners and advanced skiers. The longest run is nine kilometres, and there are 22 lifts, including: four cable cars; three gondolas; a chairlift; 13 ski lifts; and the famous underground Metro Alpin.
Nearby Zermatt is partially linked to Saas - Fee and has the profile of the imposing Matterhorn on its doorstep. Away from the skiing, the informative Saaser Museum is packed with photographs of the old Saas Valley, as well as old tools, kitchen utensils and furniture of mountain people. Saas - Fee also boasts the highest revolving restaurant in the world (3,500m) and the world's largest ice pavilion.
The ski season runs from the end of November to the end of April and there is summer skiing on Mittelallalin Glacier from the end of June to the end of November. Geneva and Zürich airports are equidistant, but train connections from Geneva to Brig are direct; from Brig, you need to complete the journey by bus.
