Samnaun Ski and Snowboard Resort, Switzerland

Located at the easternmost extremity of the Graubunden region of Switzerland, Samnaun ski resort is linked with the neighbouring Austrian resort of Ischgl, and together they boast the largest ski area in the eastern Alps - the Silvretta Arena. Samnaun has good beginner to advanced slopes, but thrill-seekers and serious snowboarders will need to venture across the border.

Samnaun is a duty-free town, and only one of a handful of villages in this remote valley bordering Austria which benefits from this unique status. There are 60 duty-free stores in total, with a vast array of goods on offer, including, tobacco, alcohol and perfume. Samnaun also has an interesting museum.

Slope-side lodging is available in Samnaun and there are 1,500 hotel beds ranging from budget to luxury four-star, as well as 1,000 chalet/apartment beds. Additional hotels are located nearby in Scuol, 30kms away. Après-ski can be quite lively and there are bars, discos and live music. The ski school and Panoramarest Alp Trida have day care for children.

Samnaun ski resort has 60kms of local downhill runs and a longest run of six kilometres. Forty-two state-of-the-art lift systems (15 in Samnaun), including the world's first double-decker cable car, the Samnaun Twinliner, operate over all 200kms of pistes in the region. The carrying capacity of the local lifts is 9,600 skiers per hour (70,600 in the region).

For alternative skiing, nearby Scuol lies cradled between the peaks of the Silvretta range and the Engadine Dolomites, to the south of Samnaun. Gentle runs alternate with mogul fields and wide powder-covered slopes. The 12-kilometre long Dream Piste into the town is the highlight of Scuol ski resort.

The long ski season runs from the end of November to early May and there are special rates in mid-December, mid-January, and mid-March to April. The most practical way to get to Samnaun ski resort is to fly to Zürich and take a long train and bus transfer. The quickest way is to fly to Innsbruck and hire a car.
