Sandwiched between Mont Blanc (Europe’s highest peak) and Lake Geneva, Samoens ski resort has an impressive range of skiing and also has links to the renowned ski region of Le Grand Massif - one of the largest ski areas of the Haute Savoie.
The majestic Grand Massif mountain range surrounds the town of Samoens, which retains its traditional flawless complexion and, as a result, has been listed in the French National Office of Historic Monuments - the only ski resort in France to be so listed. Its range of activities and facilities are numerous, and the atmosphere is addictively pleasant.
Accommodation in Samoens can cater for a wide range of guests, providing tourists with a choice of top class hotels and traditional wooden chalets, as well as some budget alternatives. Activities and pastimes can be enjoyed in a peaceful and preserved landscape, while numerous restaurants offer local and international delights. There are several bars as well as a nightclub for late-night entertainment.
Samoens itself has 28 fantastic ski and snowboard runs at its disposal, with a focus on beginners and intermediates; altogether there are 134 runs in the region that cover 265kms of pisted terrain. Sixteen ski lifts include chair and draglifts, with an hourly capacity of 16,700 people.
For alternative skiing, the Portes du Soleil ski circuit is only 30 minutes’ drive away at Les Gets and offers another 650kms of superb runs, as well as some challenging off-piste. Chamonix-Mont Blanc is also nearby, to the south, offering more fantastic slopes. Back in the Samoens area, the Giffre River runs through the valley and there are several lakes which provide the focal points for some numerous walks.
The ski season at Samoens runs from mid-December to late April and the most convenient means for getting here is to fly to Geneva and take the Skibus, or take a train to Cluses and bus or taxi from there.
