Sierra Summit Ski and Snowboard Resort, USA

Located on the scenic Huntington Lake in between Yosemite and Kings Canyon national parks, to the northeast of Fresno, Sierra Summit ski resort has a good spread of ski and snowboard runs for all abilities as well as three terrain parks for keen snowboarders.

Facilities at the resort are fairly limited and consist of a ski rental and repair shop and a sports shop. Additionally, there are lessons offered for racing and Kids' Express Programs. A day lodge offers fast-food and a bar. There is also a restaurant and bar in the only slope-side accommodation, the Sierra Summit Inn, which offers a variety of rooms and suites. Other lodgings in condos and hotels are nearby.

Sierra Summit has 40 runs spread over 480 hectares of skiable terrain and a 500-metre vertical; intermediate skiers and snowboarders get the majority of the terrain. Nine lift systems, including six chairlifts, two handle tows and one T-bar, provide slope access; the longest slope is 3.6kms. Snowboarders have access to all trails, plus three modern freestyle parks.

For alternative snowboarding and skiing, Mammoth Mountain ski resort is located to the northeast and offers a huge range of runs and three excellent terrain parks, as well as extensive facilities. There is some outstanding scenery in the Sierra National Forest, Yosemite National Park and Kings Canyon; while San Francisco makes a great daytrip away from the slopes.

The ski season at Sierra Summit runs from November to April, and children under seven years of age ski for free and minors and seniors receive discounts. Everyone skis for free on their birthday as well. Flying to San Francisco and taking a shuttle or hiring a car is the most convenient way to get to Sierra Summit.
