Ski Cooper Ski and Snowboard Resort, USA

Nestled in the White River National Forest, to the east of Aspen and southwest of Denver, Ski Cooper is a family-orientated ski resort and somewhat quieter than its famous neighbours. This traditional resort has a good range of runs for all abilities, a wide range of other activities, and an interesting historical background.

Ski Cooper was originally used as a training site for US forces in WWII, and the nearby town of Leadville acts as the resort centre. Facilities-wise, there is a ski rental and repair shop, a sports shop, first-aid, and a ski school with lessons for groups and singles. The nearby town of Leadville provides creature comforts.

There is no lodging within walking distance of the slopes, but you’ll find plenty of motels, hotels, condos and bed-and-breakfasts available in all price ranges at Leadville. Snowmobiling, tubing and swimming are among the non-ski alternatives offered. Additionally, Leadville has many fine restaurants, shops and bars. Childcare is also available for ages two to seven years.

Most of Ski Cooper’s 26 slopes are aimed at intermediate skiers and snowboarders, and all lie across 160 hectares and 360m of vertical terrain. Slope access is provided by four lift systems that include one triple chair, one double chair and two surface lifts, with an hourly carrying capacity of 3,300 people. The longest run at Ski Cooper is 2.2kms.

For alternative skiing and snowboarding, there are a number of quality resorts in the region, including: the four famed and very different centres at Aspen; world renowned Vail; and Breckenridge, one of the world’s greatest. Off the slopes, the charming town of Leadville is home of the legendary Molly Brown. Here, you can enjoy historical tours and visit the National Mining Hall of Fame.

Ski Cooper’s ski season runs from mid-November to April and prices remain fixed throughout. The easiest way to get to Ski Cooper is to fly to Denver International
Airport and transfer by shuttle bus, or hire a car.
