Toggenburg Ski and Snowboard Resort, Switzerland

The region known as the Toggenburg sits between the awesome Säntis Massif and the storybook peaks of the seven Churfirsten mountains. The resort is home to Simon Ammann, the double Olympic ski jumping gold medallist, and has a fantastic selection of winter sports and activities amid untouched natural surroundings. Toggenburg remains hugely popular and is the largest ski and winter sports area in eastern Switzerland.

The Gamserrugg and Chäserugg mountains in the Toggenburg Valley dominate the area and attract snowboarders and families alike, with their varied terrain and wonderful backdrops. Toggenburg is a German-speaking resort made up of three villages - Wildhaus, Unterwasser and Alt St Johann - and has been awarded the ‘Families Welcome’ seal of approval for its facilities and home-away-from-home atmosphere.

The resort has 5,500 beds in accommodation consisting of family-run guesthouses to quaint hotel apartments. Twelve mountain restaurants are among the cafés, bars, discos and other eateries at the resort, while Raclette parties and concerts provide an authentic ski resort ambience. Visit the dairy museum or the flea market and be secure in the knowledge that the resort provides excellent childcare and tuition.

Toggenburg has 55kms of groomed slopes as well as a host of off-piste possibilities ranging in difficulty, with 25 per cent of beginner, 50 per cent intermediate and 25 per cent advanced runs. The longest run measures seven kilometres at the resort, which has a top elevation of 2,262m and a vertical descent of 1,212m. Nineteen lifts move 17,000 skiers per hour and include a tram and funicular. The resort provides a fantastic range of boarding options for snowboarders, including two terrain parks as well as snowboard and ski tuition by 80 instructors.

The resort sits by the beautiful principality of Liechtenstein, which affords stunning views and great daytrip possibilities. The village of Vaduz contains the State Art Collection and offers good temporary exhibitions, plus the art collections of past princes of Liechtenstein. A ski museum is open in the afternoons for those who want to swot up on their ski history.

The season at Toggenburg is from late November to April; the best conditions are considered to be at the height of the season. Zürich International Airport is 1 hour, 30 minutes away from the resort after a train and bus connection.
