Located south of Lake Geneva and near Chambery, Valmorel lies across the Maurienne and Tarentaise valleys and is an ideal ski resort for families and learners. Valmorel also has the advantage of being near the famed Three Valleys ski region, with its huge number of pistes.
Valmorel is a purpose-built ski resort but has the appeal of a traditional Alpine town with its low-rise stone and wood buildings and traffic-free main street. Valmorel also features ski-in/ski-out accessibility and has excellent facilities and a good range of shops.
Thousands of beds are available in slope-side luxury hotel/resorts, traditional-looking chalets, apartments and private residences. Most après-ski activities are centred on the pedestrianised main street, and there are some fine restaurants serving traditional fare as well as some lively bars and traditional pubs.
Valmorel ski resort is linked with nearby St Francois to provide 162kms of mainly beginner and intermediate slopes, both above and below the tree-line. There is also a good range of advanced and expert runs, as well as some off-piste powder for keen snowboarders. Thirty-four lifts (54 with St Francois), featuring chair and surface lifts, serve all pistes.
For alternative skiing and snowboarding, the nearby Three Valleys ski area, to the south, has 600kms of fantastic terrain among its several resorts, with all levels and categories catered for. Courchevel is the most well known of the Three Valleys resorts and has superb skiing, an array of other activities and lively après-ski. The modernised 16th century town of Grenoble offers interesting sightseeing away from the slopes.
The ski season at Valmorel resort runs from December to April and cheap rates are offered until mid-December and towards the end of the season. Valmorel is easily accessed, and the most convenient means of getting here is to fly to Chambery, Geneva or Lyon and take a train to Moutiers, from where shuttles go to the resort.
