Set in the Balkans and home to the scenic Julian Alps, the country of Slovenia has prospered greatly since its claim to independence in 1991. Besides being an interesting summer destination with historic settlements and pleasant summer resort lakes, Slovenia offers some great winter resorts where the atmosphere is relaxed and the skiing is easily as good as anywhere in Europe.
Set in the Pohorje mountain range, the Mariborsko Pohorje ski resort is renowned for its cross-country action and powdery white slopes. Meanwhile, trekkers can enjoy a variety of scenic routes through forest and woodland. Away from the snow, the nearby town of Maribor offers après-ski options as well as a wealth of visitor amenities.
Known for its Alpine skiing World Cup competitions, the resort of Kranjska Gora is set amid stunning Alpine scenery in the Zgornjesavska Valley. The resort offers 20 miles of skiable terrain, of which the greater part is aimed at those of intermediate ability, though beginner and advanced skiers will also find something here.
The Bohinj glacial basin at the centre of Triglav National Park is home to Kobla and Vogel, two of Slovenia's best known resorts. Situated above the town of Bistrica, Kobla offers 15 miles of slopes; while Vogel, which is somewhat higher, offers 20 miles. Besides skiing, the Bohini region offers visitors a pleasant, traditional environment and some beautiful landscapes featuring lush green forest areas.
Visitors can fly to Ljubljana's international airport, which handles flights from most major European destinations. Alternatively, train or road options are both viable and relatively convenient. Modern, comfortable trains run to Slovenia's chief tourist centres from a variety of neighbouring countries including Austria, Croatia, Hungary, Macedonia and Yugoslavia. Buses from similar destinations are cheap and efficient, while those driving themselves can enter the country via borders with Italy, Austria, Hungary or Croatia.
Unforeseen incidents such as property theft or injury are obvious risks to anyone travelling in an unfamiliar environment. Winter sports in particular present holidaymakers with the possibility of injury and it is imperative that you purchase suitable travel insurance before taking a ski holiday in Slovenia.
