Avoriaz ski resort is located about 80kms southeast of Geneva, right on the Swiss border in the Portes du Soleil ski region, and is only directly accessible by road. The quickest way to get here is to fly to Geneva and hire a car, but the most practical option is to take a train and bus transfer. Travellers also have the option of self-drive and international rail travel.
The nearest major airport is Geneva-Cointrin and trains regularly go to Thonon Les Bains and Cluses, from where you need to take a bus to Avoriaz. By hire car, the best route, although longer, is to drive around the Lake Geneva autobahn and exit on to route 201 for Monthey and Avoriaz (140kms; two hours). Alternatively, fly to Lyon, transfer by bus to the city and local bus from there.
The most direct self-drive route from Calais goes via Reims/Dijon/Lausanne and Monthey. From Monthey, follow the signs to Avoriaz (825kms; eight to nine hours). Remember that Avoriaz is a car-free resort, so you will need to leave your car in the parking area outside. From Lyon, Avoriaz is accessible via the (A-40) Lyon-Geneva autobahn and the (A-1/A-9) Lake Geneva autobahn (280kms; three hours).
Regular Eurostar trains go from London's Waterloo station to Paris (Nord), from where high-speed TGV trains go to Geneva. Services from here go on to Thonon Les Bains, and Cluses. From either of these stations, you will need to organise transport via the local bus network, or taxi. The cheapest option of all is to take a Eurolines bus all the way to Geneva. Buses go to Avoriaz from the central bus station (two hours).
