Getting to Bohinj, Slovenia for your Skiing and Snowboarding Holiday

Bohinj ski resort is located near the Italian and Austrian borders in the Julian Alps, 70kms from Ljubljana and 200kms from Venice-Marco Polo Airport. The most favourable and quickest travel option is to fly to Ljubljana and hire a car. Rail travel is also relatively convenient, while self-drive is the least attractive due to the distances involved.

The nearest international airport is Ljubljana’s Golubovci Airport and there are regular shuttle and bus transfers into town, from where trains go to the villages, via Jesenice station. By hire car, head northwest along the A-1 to Lesce, and then follow the signs for Bohinjska Bistrica (70kms; one hour). Venice-Marco Polo is an alternative airport, three hours away.

If you’re coming from the UK, travelling by car is a long 13-hour journey over 1,350kms. The quickest route from Calais uses autoroutes and autobahns and bypasses the cities of Reims, Metz, Strasbourg, Stuttgart, Munich, Salzburg and Villach. Bypass Villach and then take the A-11 into Slovenia, and then take the Blejska Dobrava exit heading south for Bohinj.

The main train routes into Slovenia run from Salzburg, Trieste, Vienna and Zagreb. From the UK, Eurostar trains go from Waterloo station in London to gare du Nord in Paris. There is a direct overnight service from nearby gare de l’Est to Munich, from where Eurocity trains go to Salzburg and on to Villach. Take another service from Villach into Slovenia and on to Bohinjska Bistrica.
