Getting to Bonneval-sur-Arc, France for your Skiing and Snowboarding Holiday

Tucked away into a corner of the Rhone-Alpes province, near the Italian border, Bonneval-sur-Arc ski resort is fairly remote but within range of the European motorway network, making self-drive travel appealing. There is a high-speed rail connection with Lyon and on to Modane, but flying to Lyon and hiring a car is the quickest option.

Champéry has the nearest major airport, but Lyon-Satolas has far more flight and transport options. Buses go to the city every 20 minutes, from where trains go to Grenoble, and on to Modane. Shuttle buses run between Modane and Bonneval-sur-Arc resort. By car from Lyon-Satolas, drive east right along the length of the A-40 and follow the signs for the resort along the D-902 (230kms; 2 hours, 30 minutes). Champéry Airport receives limited international air traffic and transfer is by train/bus combination, via Modane.

Driving from the UK usually involves a Dover to Calais ferry crossing. The most direct self-drive route from Calais goes via Reims, Dijon and Geneva (Annemasse). From here, take the A-40 autobahn to Chamonix, and then keep heading south on the SS-26 and the D-902 to Bonneval-sur-Arc ski resort (1,000kms; ten hours).

The most convenient train connection from London is the 09:09 Eurostar from Waterloo station to Paris (Nord). A high-speed TGV then goes to Modane from gare de Lyon at 14:24, arriving at 18:32. Shuttle buses run between Mondane and Bonneval-sur-Arc resort. Eurostar also offers a direct overnight service to Bourge St Maurice and Aime La Plange on Fridays and Saturdays (10 hours). Buses go on to Bonneval-sur-Arc.
