Getting to Bormio, Italy for your Skiing and Snowboarding Holiday

Bormio is located in the Italian region of Lombardy, 200kms northwest of Milan and near the Swiss border. Getting to Bormio is fairly straightforward, despite its remoteness. Flying, international rail travel to Torino (nearby) and self-drive, are all viable options. Flying to Milan and hiring a car or transferring by Skibus is the quickest option.

Milan’s Linate Airport is the nearest, while Zürich International Airport is the same journey time away by car, at just over three hours. Transport options from both involve a train/bus combination, or Skibus. Public transport will take around four hours, or roughly an hour less by car.

Travelling by car from the UK usually involves a Dover-Calais ferry crossing or utilising the Channel Tunnel, from where the quickest self-drive route follows tolled motorways and goes via Reims, Metz, Strasbourg, Basel, Zürich and Landquart. From Landquart, carry on southeast along route 28, cross the border into Italy and head on to Livigno (1,080kms; 11 hours plus).

The journey from Milan-Linate Airport uses several roads and goes via Vimercate, Lecco, Sondrio and Tirano, from where route 29 carries on to Livigno. From Zürich International Airport, follow the A-3 and route 28.

Milan is a rail hub and the most convenient option from Paris is to take the direct overnight express train. Eurostar trains arrive all day in Paris from London (Waterloo station). From Milan, take a regional train to Tirano, from where local buses go direct to Livigno ski resort; total travel time is about 15 hours.

Eurolines buses run from all over Europe to Milan, from where local buses run to Bormio; alternatively, take a train to Tirano and then a bus to the resort.
