Only 44kms from the Austrian border in the Veneto region of the Belluno province, Cortina d’Ampezzo ski resort is best reached by flying to Treviso Airport and transferring by dedicated ski coach. Other options include travelling by rail, with regular train connections from London and Paris to nearby Calalzo di Cadore, while self-drive is the least popular option.
The nearest airport to Cortina is Treviso Airport and there is a frequent and free coach transfer to the resort on Saturdays and Sundays in the ski season. Alternatively, take a bus to Treviso train station and catch a train to Calalzo di Cadore (35kms southeast of Cortina). From here, take a local bus to the resort.
Venice-Marco Polo Airport is the alternative airport, with bus transfers to Mestre train station and connections as above. Helicopter transfers are also available from Marco Polo Airport to Cortina d’Ampezzo (35 minutes).
Self-drive from the UK normally involves a ferry crossing from Dover to Calais and the best route from here takes in the cities of Reims, Metz, Strasbourg, Stuttgart, Ulm, Munich and Innsbruck. From Innsbruck, the A-13 heads south and joins with the Italian A-22 and several other minor roads (1,300kms; 12 hours). Both Treviso and Venice-Marco Polo airports are connected to Cortina d’Ampezzo ski resort via the A-27 motorway and route SS-51.
Regular Eurostar trains go from London (Waterloo Station) to Paris in under four hours; from Paris, direct express trains go to Mestre (Italy). From Mestre, take a Calalzo di Cadore-bound train, via Treviso, and then transfer by bus to Cortina d’Ampezzo ski resort.
