Geilo is situated midway between Oslo and Bergen at 230kms from both cities and is straightforward to get to, being directly accessible by both road and rail. Flying to Oslo or Bergen and transferring by train is the most practical option, while international rail travel is the next best option, and self-drive is the most demanding.
Valdres Airport (Fagernes) is the nearest; however, Oslo-Gardermoen and Bergen-Flesland airports offer far more flight options and better transfers. Transfer to each respective city by taxi, shuttle or bus, and then take the train all the way to Geilo (about three hours). Journey times are about the same by car.
Norway is a remote northern European country and self-drive usually involves the Hojen to Larvik (Denmark-Norway) ferry crossing or driving through Sweden. From the UK, you can take the Dover to Calais ferry crossing that involves a 1,550-kilometre drive, via Antwerp, Essen, Hamburg and Aalborg, and then the ferry crossing to Larvik, and continue on to Geilo. However, the more practical option involves the Newcastle to Bergen ferry, from where highway 7 runs to Geilo.
Rail transport is a more efficient travel method and it’s fairly straightforward if coming from London. The Eurostar runs daily from Waterloo station to Brussels, from where you can take a sleeper train to Copenhagen. There is a regular service from Copenhagen to Oslo, from where the Bergen Railway links the Geilo ski resort with the capital.
