Grindelwald is located in the canton of Bern, in the centre of Switzerland, and is only 75kms from the Swiss capital. The resort is accessible by road and rail and there are other options besides flying and taking the train, which is the best option. Frequent and regular trains go from London to connect with other trains to the resort, and self-drive is also feasible.
The closest international airport is Bern-Belp Airport; however, due to numerous bus/train changes and less flexible flight options, Zürich International Airport is the number one choice. There are two trains an hour to the resort from Zürich, with one to three changes, taking about 3 hours, 30 minutes. Trains go via Interlaken, with an Intercity and Regional combination.
The quickest self-drive route from Calais takes in the cities of Reims, Metz, Strasbourg, Basel and Lucerne. From Lucerne, take the A-8 motorway (south) to Interlaken and exit on to the Grindelwald mountain road (935kms; nine hours). From Zürich International Airport, take the Lucerne-Interlaken route along the A-20/A-4 and A-8 motorways, exiting on to the Grindelwald road at Interlaken.
There are several daily train connections from London, with between three and five changes and taking from 11 to 18 hours. A good connection has the 08:12 Eurostar leaving Waterloo station for Paris (Nord), arriving at 11:47. Change to gare de Lyon, from where a TGV goes to Lausanne at 13:04, arriving at 16:52. There are three other changes at Lausanne, Bern and Interlaken (two Intercity trains and a Regional). The Regional to Grindelwald arrives at a little after 20:00. This route takes 11 hours and there are several return options.
