Getting to Interlaken, Switzerland for your Skiing and Snowboarding Holiday

Interlaken ski resort lies south of two major cities, the capital, Bern, and Zürich and there are many options for getting here. There are frequent train connections from London, and a good network of motorways and autobahns makes driving straightforward. The most convenient way to get here is to fly to Zürich and transfer by train.

The closest international airport is Bern-Belp, but Zürich International Airport receives the bulk of the air traffic, both scheduled and charter services. There are two trains per hour from the airport that connect with Interlaken; direct and one-change connections are available (two hours). Geneva-Cointrin Airport is another option, with train transfers taking over two hours.

Self-drive from Calais takes in the cities of Reims, Metz, Strasbourg, Basel, Bern and Interlaken, by way of the A-26/A-4/A-35/A-1 and A-6 autoroutes and autobahns (900kms; eight hours). From Bern, a well maintained highway and autobahn route connects Interlaken with the airports at Zürich and Geneva as well as with most large cities in Switzerland and Europe. From Zürich International Airport, take the A-20 and A-4 (Lucerne) autobahns, and the A-8 (Lucerne-Thun) autobahn (140kms; 1 hour, 30 minutes).

The train connection from London involves two to four changes and services go throughout the day (10 to 17 hours). The 08:12 Eurostar departure from Waterloo station to Paris (Nord) is a good connection with convenient departure and arrival times. From Paris (Nord) walk or take the metro to gare de Lyon, from where a TGV goes to Lausanne. From Lausanne there is another change in Bern (Intercity train) before arriving in Interlaken (West) at 19:15. Interlaken-West is the main station in the centre of the town. Regular Skibuses ply the route between other nearby ski resorts.
