Getting to Kranjska Gora, Slovenia for your Skiing and Snowboarding Holiday

Kranjska Gora is located in northwestern Slovenia, 85kms northwest of Ljubljana and 210kms south of Salzburg, and is accessible by road only. The quickest way here is to fly to Ljubljana and hire a car for the transfer, or take a minibus. Travelling by road from Western Europe is fairly arduous, but straightforward, while rail travel is also feasible.

The nearest international airport is Ljubljana’s Brnik Airport, located just to the northeast of the capital. Ljubljana receives flights from all over Europe and is linked to the city by taxis and shuttles, from where minibuses do return trips to Kranjska Gora and trains go as far as Jesenice station.

Kranjska Gora is only a few kilometres from the Vienna autobahn in Austria, which is well connected to the European motorway network; there are road crossings from Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia. If driving from the UK, the quickest route once off the ferry in Calais is via Reims, Metz, Strasbourg, Stuttgart, Munich and Salzburg.

From Salzburg, head south along the A-10 for Villach, and then head west on the A-2 before exiting on to the B-83 and B-109 for the Slovenian border. Continue on this road, now highway 1, to Kranjska Gora (1,300kms; 13 to 14 hours). From Brnik Airport, head northwest along the A-1 and highway 1 for 85kms to the ski resort.

Trains enter Slovenia from Italy (via Trieste), Austria (via Graz and Villach) and Croatia. Direct trains from destinations including Vienna, Salzburg, Venice, Milan, Munich, Budapest and Brigade pass through Slovenia. There is an overnight train from Paris to Munich, from where a Eurocity goes directly to Salzburg and another service from there to Villach. Trains from Villach go as far as Jesenice (24kms east of Kranjska Gora).

There is also an extensive international bus timetable from neighbouring countries, and internal bus transport is well organised and relatively inexpensive.
