La Plagne ski resort is 110kms east of Chambery and 160kms south of Geneva on the edge of the Rhone-Alpes province, and there are favourable options for getting here. The most popular is to fly to Geneva and transfer to Aime by train, and then take a bus to the resort. Self-drive is along major motorways, while train travel is also an attractive option.
Geneva-Cointrin Airport is the gateway airport and there is a Skibus that goes direct to La Plagne. Trains go via Chambery to Aime, from where buses and taxis go to the resort. Lyon-Satolas Airport receives major carriers and also has a Skibus, and Chambery, Grenoble and Annecy also have airports that are smaller with fewer options.
Driving from the UK usually involves a ferry crossing to Calais, with a well-established route from here encompassing major tolled autoroutes. From Calais, bypass the cities of Reims, Dijon, Lyon and Chambery. From Chambery, continue along the A-43/430 and N-90 to Aime, and then head south on the D-220/221 to La Plagne (970kms; nine to ten hours). Geneva is 240kms via Annecy, Moutiers and Aime.
Regular Eurostar trains go from London (Waterloo) to Paris (Nord). From nearby gare de Lyon, high-speed TGV trains go to Lyon, from where regional trains go to Aime Le Plagne via Chambery. From Aime, buses and taxis make the short journey to La Plagne. From London, overnight Eurostar trains go directly to Bourge St Maurice and Aime La Plange on Fridays and Saturdays (10 hours).
The train does not stop at Aime La Plagne on the return journey, so you will have to get to Bourg St Maurice.
