Situated in the Haute Savoie ski region, Le Grand Bornand ski resort is 50kms south of Geneva and 170kms east of Lyon and is best accessed by flying to Geneva and taking a bus from the airport. Rail travel to Annecy from London is another option, while self-drive is very popular due to the excellent network of interconnected European motorways.
The nearest major airport is Geneva-Cointrin Airport, an air hub for the region, receiving a huge number of flights from world cities. There is a connecting bus service direct from the airport to the resort in the winter. Annecy-Meythet Airport is a viable alternative, if you can get a good deal; while Lyon-Satolas also receives a lot of traffic.
The self-drive route from Calais is an 860-kilometre, one-day drive along efficient and tolled autoroutes. From Calais, bypass the cities of Reims, Dijon, Geneva and Annemasse. From here, continue along the A-40 and exit on to the D-12 (south), towards the resort. From Geneva-Cointrin Airport, take route de Meyrin and route de Malagnou, through the city, connecting with the A-40 and the D-12.
By train, there are three to five changes between London and Annecy (near Le Grand Bornand), taking eight to nine hours. Eurostar trains go from Waterloo station to Paris (Nord), from where high-speed TGV trains go from the nearby gare de Lyon to Annecy. From Annecy train station, there is a daily bus service to Le Grand Bornand.
Alternatively, there is a direct overnight train service from London to Bourge St Maurice and Aime La Plange on Fridays and Saturdays in season. Buses go from these stations to Le Grand Bornand. Eurolines buses also run from the UK to Paris and Geneva. From either of these destinations, Le Grand Bornand is accessible by means of local buses.
