Near the Swiss border at the northwestern extremity of the Italian peninsular and 100kms northwest of Milan, Macugnaga - Monte Rosa ski resort is fairly remote and only directly accessible by car. Flying to Milan and hiring a car or transferring by Skibus is the most convenient option. Rail travel is the next best option and driving is also popular.
The nearest international airport is Milan’s Malpensa Airport, and the journey by hire car from here takes about two hours. The Skibus offers the next best alternative and is the most practical transfer option, while the train/bus combination is the least convenient. Turin’s Casselle is the alternative airport and if you can’t get flights here, try Geneva-Cointrin Airport.
Driving from the UK usually involves a ferry or Channel Tunnel journey to Calais, from where the quickest route utilises autoroutes and autobahns and goes via Reims, Dijon and Lausanne. From Lausanne, carry on along the A-9 and E-62 (east) to the border at Gondo, from where the SS-33 and SS-549 go to Macugnaga (1,000kms; 10 to 11 hours).
By train, Macugnaga - Monte Rosa is near the Paris-Lausanne-Domodossola line, from where buses and taxis go to the resort. From the UK, there are several Eurostar trains every day from Waterloo station to Paris, from where services go to Lausanne (Lake Geneva), and on to Domodossola (near Macugnaga). Total travel time from London is around 15 hours.
