Mont Avila is located about 75kms northwest of Montréal in the Saint-Sauveur Valley, near the village of Saint-Sauveur, and is directly accessible by road only. Most travellers from the UK will invariably fly to Montréal and transfer by coach; while rail travel and self-drive from the US are also popular options.
The nearest major airport is Montréal’s Dorval Airport, which receives direct flights from the UK and major world cities, and also has a busy domestic timetable. Buses are available for transfer to Saint-Sauveur, from where taxis and buses go to the resort. If you hire a car at the airport, the quickest route uses highways 13 and 1, heading northwest (65kms; 45 minutes).
By road from Québec City, take highway 40 along the St Lawrence River to Montréal, and then bypass the city on highway 640 to meet with highway 15 (north) to Saint-Sauveur (300kms; four hours). From Toronto, Montréal is accessible along highway 401 (600kms; seven hours). From New York, follow I-87 north to the border, where it becomes highway 15 (675kms; seven to eight hours).
Five trains per day, including a night train, run from Toronto to Montréal, taking from between five and 11 hours; while the daily New York (Penn station) departure to Montréal leaves at 08:15 and arrives at 18:30.
Greyhound buses converge on Montréal from Toronto, Ottawa and Québec City; night buses are also available. Local buses (ski buses) run to Mont Avila from Montréal rail and bus stations.
