Getting to Mount Bachelor, USA for your Skiing and Snowboarding Holiday

Mount Bachelor ski resort is 300kms southeast of Portland and 40kms west of Bend (the nearest town) and is directly accessible by road only. The quickest way here is to fly to Redmond Airport (north of the resort) and transfer by shuttle or hire car. Self-driving is also an option; while train travel will get you to within 100kms.

The nearest airport to Mt Bachelor is in Redmond, which is served by Horizon, United Express and Skywest, with direct flights from San Francisco, Seattle and Portland; shuttle buses run to and from Bend. Portland International Airport is the nearest major hub, from where a shuttle service to Bend is also available.

Bend connects with eastern Washington and California via US highway 97, and Mt Bachelor is 40kms west of Bend on the scenic Cascade Lakes Highway. If travelling from Portland, take I-5 south to Salem and exit at junction 253 on to highway 22/20, southeast heading for Sisters. From there, head south along Three Creeks road for Mount Bachelor (300kms; four hours).

If you are coming from Los Angeles, travelling by train is an interesting way to get to Mt Bachelor on the LA-Seattle Coast Starlight service. The closest you can get, however, is Chemult (105kms south of Bend). It is advisable to call ahead for a taxi for the trip to Bend from Chemult. Greyhound Lines coaches serve Portland from many destinations and also run to central Oregon.
