Oberammergau ski resort is located in the south of Germany, 95kms from Münich and 75kms north of Innsbruck. There are a number of options for getting here and the most convenient is to fly to Münich and hire a car. There are train connections from London via Paris and Münich, and self-drive is also a popular option.
The nearest international airport is Münich’s FJ Strauss Airport, which has numerous rail connections with Münich city and on to Oberammergau ski resort. The drive from Münich is particularly scenic and together with the convenience of self-drive, hiring a car is very popular. Innsbruck Airport is an alternative to Münich, offering faster transfer times via rail to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and a bus from here.
By car from Calais, take the major autoroutes and autobahns A-26 and A-4 (France), and the A-8 and A-95 (Germany); the two day journey is 1,040kms. From FJ Strauss Airport, take the A-92 and A-9 for the city, and then the A-95 (Münich-Garmisch-Partenkirchen) autobahn and exit at Eschenlohe, following the signs for the B-23 and Oberammergau. Innsbruck is 75kms away.
The Oberammergau train station is on the Murnau-Bad, Kohlgrum-Oberammergau rail line, with frequent connections in all directions. Through Murnau, all major German cities can be reached. Daily trains arrive from Münich in two hours and from Frankfurt in seven hours.
Eurostar trains from London depart Waterloo station daily at 17:09 and terminate at Paris, gare du Nord. Overnight trains then go from gare de l’Est and arrive in Münich the next day. Trains from Münich to Oberammergau take two hours, via Murnau. There is also a possible connection from London (10:29) going via Paris, Zürich, Innsbruck and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and then by bus from here.
