Located southwest of Münich and close to the Austrian border, Oberstdorf ski resort is serviced by three airports and has a train station. The most practical way to get here is to fly to Münich and hire a car at the airport. Trains go from the airport but there are three or four connections, taking as many hours. Travel by rail from London is another option, and self-drive is always popular.
The nearest international airport is Friedrichshafen Airport (97kms), on Lake Constance which receives winter charters and low-cost flights. The train journey from Friedrichshafen goes via Lindau (change) to Immenstadt (change) and Oberstdorf.
Transfer from Innsbruck involves a complicated route, while trains from Münich’s FJ Strauss Airport go via the city with two or three more onward connections.
If you’re driving, the journey from Calais takes in the major autoroutes and autobahns of the A-26 and A-4 (France), and A8 and A-7 (Germany). You should allow two days for the 970kms journey. From Münich Airport, drivers should stay on the autobahn until signs are reached for Lindau. The easiest route is along the A-96 autobahn, and then follow the signs for Kempten and south to Oberstdorf. From Friedrichshafen Airport, take the E-54, B-308 and B-19 (two hours).
There are several rail connections from London’s Waterloo station, but the most convenient leaves at 05:34 and arrives in Oberstdorf at 19:48, via three other connections; the Eurocity from Paris, l’Est station to Ulm, at 10:43; the Ulm-Immenstadt Regional Express at 17:58; and the Immenstadt-Oberstdorf, Länderbahn train at 19:22.
